The notice reads: "IMPORTANT On this paddle use only the new-style windlasses with small tapering hole". Haven't windlasses always had a small tapering socket? Or is this spindle smaller (more spindly? Spindlier?) than most?

I was puzzled by that too when we came that way a few months ago.
Thanks for your picture puzzles, they made us smile as we often played that game with Ian's Dad as we travel around. Sadly Dad passed away last week, so shall look out for more of your teasers in his memory.
