At one point recently I noticed that this blog had risen as high as 21 in the UK Waterways Sites ranking. When I took my weekly snapshot of the top thirty on Sunday I'd slipped to number 36. Now, after a week where my time on the computer has been taken up with editing the village pantomime video, and where my blog posts have been less frequent, I see I am at number 46.
Someone else whose ranking has slipped is Granny Buttons. For a time Andrew's blog sat one place below No Problem, showing that blogging frequency is almost as important as content. Today, though, normality of a sort has been restored, and Granny Buttons is back at number 6; No Problem at number 8. The fact that Andrew has recently posted seems to have made the difference.

I was thinking about your rise a few days ago. My conclusion was that your reference to 999 pulled in a lot of non boating hits. Do your stats back this up?
You see, I suspect that a juicy title can do much to attract outside interest - hence Andrew's recent title which included the phrase Boat Porn. In that way one could argue that shocking headlines can represent a triumph of style over substance - which works in the press.

Andy, I've just looked at the stats. Yes, my hits peaked on the day of that post, but as the post was timed for 2359, the peak was actually for the previous day's post, http://jhalfie.blogspot.com/2011/01/timelapse-camera-captures-moment-of.html

I'm sure you're right about the significance of the headline. When I mentioned Elvis in one recently my hits rocketed!
The big failing of the ranking system is that it treats all hits equally, so a visit by someone attracted by a clever title who immediately logs off when they realise they've been misled counts just as much as someone who reads your post from end to end because they find it interesting. I can't think of a way round it though.

Good point, Jim. I'm mystified by the stats which indicate that people look at my blog for 0 seconds.
About 6 billion people view my blog for 0 seconds every day!!
